Multiplayer fans can form squads featuring a mix of humans and aliens and engage in head-to-head action, and the game supports custom mods. Combat has been slightly altered to offer guerrilla tactics befitting the new nature of XCOM as a resistance force, and procedurally generated levels mean the maps, missions, and goals are almost always different. Now, inXCOM 2, the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.

Gamers can recruit five different classes of resistance fighter, each with specific skill trees and special class abilities, but there are also plenty of different aliens to battle, including the new ADVENT security forces.
